Disney’s New Mulan Gets A Rating No Other Recent Reboot Did

The new Mulan movie from Disney will be the first of the company’s live-action reboots to receive a PG-13 rating in the United States. The official rating from the Motion Picture Association of America states that film will be rated PG-13 for its “sequences of violence,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

All of Disney’s previous live-action remakes, including Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo, and others, received PG or G ratings. Mulan also becomes the first Disney movie overall to receive a PG-13 rating since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). As the most recent trailer displayed, the new Mulan will indeed have a lot of action and presumably violence as the movie is about war, after all.

Disney is known to be a family friendly company that doesn’t wade into more adult fare. The exception is the Deadpool franchise, which Disney acquired when it bought Fox. The Deadpool movies will continue to be rated R, but movies made directly by Disney are unlikely to ever exceed a PG-13 rating.

The new Mulan stars Liu Yifei as the Chinese teenager who disguises herself as a man to fight in the Imperial army against invaders. You can check out the newest trailer for the movie above.

Mulan’s cast also includes a number of high profile Asian stars, such as Donnie Yen, Jet Li, and Gong Li. The movie is directed by New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro, who previously helmed The Zookeeper’s Wife. Caro previously stated that this version of Mulan won’t include any songs–and presumably Eddie Murphy’s talking dragon Mushu will be absent too. It releases on March 27, 2020.

In other news about reboots of animated classics, Disney has confirmed it will kill Bambi’s mom again.
