Tom Holland Was A Little Drunk When He Helped Save Spider-Man’s MCU Future

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has revealed that he was a few pints in–“drunk,” in his words–when Disney CEO Bob Iger called him to discuss bringing Spider-Man back to the MCU.

In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live–which airs on Disney’s ABC network–Holland recalled the fascinating story of how he helped save Spider-Man’s MCU life. After the news broke that Sony and Disney could not come to terms, Holland said he was devastated. He asked for Iger’s email so he could connect with him to express his gratitude about having the opportunity in the first place.

Iger responded quickly and said he would like to set up a time to speak with Holland on the phone. Iger asked when Holland might be free to chat. “You don’t give Bob Iger a schedule. you’re like, ‘Whenever, Bob!” Holland said.

When Iger eventually called Holland, the actor was at his local pub with his parents for trivia night. “I’m like three pints in, haven’t eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number,” Holland said. “I have a feeling, ‘I think this is Bob Iger, but I’m drunk!’ So my Dad’s like, ‘Just take the call, you’ll be fine!'”

Holland did take the call, and Iger informed him that “there is a world in which we can make this work.” After more phone calls, and going back and forth with Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman, they got a deal done, and Holland said he felt thankful that both high-ranking executives listened to his thoughts about the future of the Spider-Man series. Holland was said to have been instrumental in helping the deal get done, and it all started by picking up the phone after a few pints.

Also in the interview, Holland said even if Spider-Man never returned to the MCU, the character’s future on film was still bright at Sony, with more movies lined up. At the same time, Holland acknowledged that “it would have been a shame to take him out of the MCU.”

With the deal now closed, it’s been announced that Spider-Man will appear in at least one more MCU movie, with executive producer Kevin Feige continuing to work on Sony’s Spider-Man films for the remainder of the new deal.

The next time we’ll see Spider-Man on the big screen is in the currently untitled third film in the Spidey franchise that opens on July 16, 2021.
